The English  equivalent could be &#8220;to be brought up short by something&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> You would say for example : &#8220;Je me suis cass\u00e9e les dents sur ce probl\u00e8me de maths !&#8221; (I failed to solve this maths problem)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n We started this conversation last week talking about the protests in \nFrance.
